These
photographs are not accidents. They are outgrowths of my photographic
philosophy, a philosophy that has evolved over years of study and
practice. Some of the key elements of my philosophy can be summarized
as follows:
·
A
camera licenses one to observe and delight in the world. Photography
slows down my life and allows me to take time to “smell
the roses.” The process of photography is more important
than the outcome. (On a personal note, this is why I use manual
cameras: they slow me down so that I can see.)
· Photographs succeed
for one reason. Because the photograph was well seen.
· Ruthlessly simplify
and clarify. Poor images mostly result from two common causes:
uncertainty of intent and including too much material.
· The difference
between a good photograph and a great photograph is measured in
centimeters.
· Images should
enable viewers to see the world in a way they may have overlooked.
